The signing of Stevie May evokes memories of Hirsty signing from Barnsley in 1986 as an 18 year old. Ok, I know that May is 21 but the feeling that I get is that we might have pulled off a major coup here. I follow Celtic as well as the Owls and have seen May play in person. A lot of you don't follow Scottish football but I have to tell you this kid is special. Over the last 12 months he has bulked up a lot and won't be outmuscled in the Championship. His record speaks for itself and I think it is foolhardy to use the word potential to describe him. This guy is by no means the finished article but is on his way to being exactly that. He is always willing to have a shot, sometimes the pass would be better but he gets a lot of goals because he is willing to have a go. Gordon Strachan has him pencilled in to be Scotland's number 9 in the near future and for Wednesday to have got him is pretty damn good business. If I was a betting man I would have a punt on him being the top scorer in the Championship this season. Yes, he really is that good!

1.) Not that I wanted to see Antonio go, and I don't know what the difference in price is with the adds ons. What I do know if Antonio was a class act one on one, and his choice of distribution was better, he would be worth seven million but it is not, so I hope your comments are on the money. In which case this signing looks to be a snip, especially with his age.
It would also be interesting to know if the French midfield player will only come If and when the takeover goes through. From SGs comments everything is in place and all parties are waiting, the difference in fees on the latest deal might possibly accelerate that move also.

2.) Yes my friend, the guy is class. Every other club in the Championship will be regretting the fact that they didn't make a bid for him. The price tag is very low considering his recent achievements but in January he could have negotiated a Bosman free (although Development compensation would have had to be paid) so Saints have cashed in for as much as they could get. Antonio is a loss to the club but not an irreplaceable one in my opinion. If we can give Stevie the service he needs (on the floor) he will score a hatful. The fact that he scored last Thursday in Europe shows that he is sharp and ready to go as well. The lad is a top guy and Wednesday will fly with our first proper striker in years!

3.) As for the Tardieu deal, that remains to be seen but he won't be demanding big bucks. His club in France were paying him a pittance so I don't see any troubles with the contract offer. If anything it is all about the price tag and whether we have enough to snap him up as well. All the press are talking about us paying £800,000 for Stevie but the official line is undisclosed. Obviously that leaves us guessing as to what is left in the Stuart Gray kitty. My feeling is that May cost over a million (with add-ons) in order to gazump Rotherham and any other interested parties. Tardieu is a defensive midfielder and not a creative one, in my eyes Coke, Semedo and Hutchinson can play the defensive role, what we need is somebody who can pick a pass ala Sheridan.

4.) Take over is back on. Best signing over this season and last in my eyes is Stuart Gray. that's a coup if anything.

5.) Happy we have signed May. The only thing I keep thinking is if he hits the ground running how long can we keep him for? A good first season and I wouldn't be surprised to see him go by the second (for a good price obviously). Have we ever held on to our best players? Brunt, Whelan, Antonio, Bougherra etc.

6.) My pal is a Saint Mirren fan and he is absolutely gutted that they have lost May.
Having said that I was at uni in Scotland when we bought Simon Donnely and he was previously class at Celtic.
I personally think that May will be the CF we have needed for a long time though.

{Ed003's Note - Why would a St Mirren fan be bothered about St Johnstone losing a player.}

7.) Yeah. let's start worrying he's going to leave NOW before he's played one game for us.

8.) 10 Aug 2014 19:30:16
I have to say that I'm not really sure any more that I want this takeover to go through not because we don't need the injection of resources a takeover would bring but because I have an all round bad feeling about the way this matter has dragged on. I know all about the assurances that MM has given about the best interests of the club but I can't help feeling there's something fundamentally wrong and that worries me.

9.) Yip, just realised what I said there ed003.
i did meen st johnson, lol.

{Ed003's Note - ;-) }

10.) Larry - think you're nearly as excited as i am about signing stevie may!
totally agree with you about the first time we saw hirsty, and i think this lad "may" have almost as big an impact?
from what i've seen, he is a hungry and natural goalscorer and he will prove to be an absolute steal for the owls!
agree with chelt also, sg deserves recognition for what he's achieved at s6, not only for the miracle turn around last season results-wise.
but he's developed and improved practically every player in the squad, everybody seems to know and enjoy their job, and the players that he's brought in so far even before we have the money to spend, should give us all confidence that we have a top man at the helm.

11.) Totally agree Howler Stuart Gray is the man to take us forward just imagine what he'd do with real money to spend.

So, a player who cost Peterboro over a million and then joined Palace for an estimated 3.5 million and scored 8 Premier League Goals in a struggling team, is going to drop back to the Championship and play for us?
I am all for being positive about the takeover and feel that things will come good but let's be realistic about the names we link ourselves with!
The striker from Sweden is more realistic but an unknown quantity, interesting to see that Modou Barrow is a Wednesday player on there!

Brandao only scored 5 goals for St Etienne last season but by all accounts leads the line well and brings in others around him with strong link play. Was never the pacy striker but has some tricks in his locker and is very good in the air, scoring a hell of a lot of headed goals. I think a 1 year deal would be ideal for all parties and he could be a bit tasty at Championship level.

Heard today that James Wilson is coming on a season long loan from man utd. Broke into their first team under giggs and even scored. Meant to be a cracking striker.
