Sheffield Wednesday have failed to agree terms with Neil Mellor.

Owls chairman Milan Mandaric confirmed this week that the club were in negotiations with the player.

He said: We are trying to secure Neil Mellor on a permanent basis.

It was understood that Owls vice-chairman and chief executive Paul Aldridge met the player s agent this week in a bid to thrash out a deal.

But the two parties appear to have failed to agree terms and as it stands, Mellor is set to return to Preston for the start of pre-season training.

Chairman Maurice Lindsay said: The position is that Sheffield Wednesday have failed to agree terms with the player and at this stage he will be coming back at the end of June to Preston.

Mellor spent the whole of last season on loan at Hillsbrough after North End identified him as a high earner that they needed to get off their wage bill.

The former Liverpool striker, who still has one-year of his North End contract remaining, has enjoyed a fruitful time at Wednesday, bagging 20 goals for them in what was an otherwise disappointing season in League One for the Sheffield club.

It was former PNE boss Alan Irvine, who initially took Mellor to Wednesday last summer.

When Irvine was sacked, Wednesday replaced him with former Bolton Wanderers manager Gary Megson.

Mellor has continued to thrive under Megson and the Owls have made no secret of the fact that they would like him to stay.

Paul Hayes protracted transfer to Charlton Athletic has still to be confirmed, but Lindsay admitted that the deal is still highly likely.

He added: The Paul Hayes situation has yet to be concluded.

Meanwhile, Lindsay has hailed the amount of season tickets North End have sold.

Already, the club has bettered last season s total despite being relegated from the Championship to League One.

Saif Lindsay: It s absolutely fantastic. I think last season we sold something like 5, 961 and we are already up to 6, 250-something.

And they are still buying even after the early bird dicount.

I was down at the ticket office only the other day and there were four people at the window buying tickets.

It s wonderful to see.
