MM has confirmed that he intends to approach the Irish FA to get permission to speak to Roy Keane. Ill be shocked if he is interested, he's only just took that job with the Irish!

Ponty_Owl

1.) Do you think he's ripped up his original short list ponty?

2.) Yep, he's playing it by ear I think.

3.) To be honest I don't think many decent managers would be interested I think we are finding it hard to fill the job

4.) Surely IF Roy keane was approached it would be to work full time with us yet also part time as RoI assistant? Dual role similar to Steve mclaren back in the Sven England era.

5.) Mandaric said he was misqouted about Keane in to nights star

6.) Bring back kim olsen as manager and adem poric as number two lol uto xxx

7.) Personally I think MM was sounding RK and the FAI out via the press then said he was misquoted when it became obvious it was a non starter.

Paul Dikov is being reported to be a target in the media now. This is getting silly. This better not be true.

Curbesly

2.) Who's he?

3.) Think he's french

We have been rumoured to be scouting Kidderminster striker Joe Lolley who has made the step up from non league to the Conference easily after, netting 7 from 16 so far after plundering 88 goals in 83 games for non league Littleton.

Ponty_Owl

1.) Its true. wednesday are lookin at lolley, good little player too. get him for abt 100k

2.) Im an owl from kidderminster, and its being said lolley is on his way to peterboro for 500k. kiddy won't give players away. they wouldn't let jamille matt leave for less than 300k. and they got it from fleetwood

There are rumours we will go in for Billy McKay from ICT in the transfer window.

Ponty_Owl

1.) 02 Dec 2013 15:56:46
I never said he is definitely signing I said there was talk if us going in for him.

2.) Int thee foot any better Ponty

3.) Nope. Missing training is killing me haha. At least I have this manager circus to keep me going.

4.) What is it with some people on here, what has someone disagreed with on your last post ponty? Unless it's one of your teammates who thinks you are a poor trainer! Trust you will be keeping us all informed of tomorrow whilst we're hard at work. Cheers NB

5.) I don't mind all the negs, I'm used to it haha, washes over me. Gutted I can't get to the game tomorrow though or have a few pints with the lads.

We have signed Dutch international Glen Loovens on a short term contract to cover injuries in defence, apparently.

Ponty_Owl

1.) Haha you disagree? Because I posted it, because its not true or because you don't want him to sign? I can't get my breath sometimes with some people on here. Other way, various news outlets have reported it, so it's either true or ongoing.

2.) What with Johnson ; McPhail and Olafinjana with you already, are you forming a Cardiff City old boys team? A bit strange that you didn't keep Bothroyd as well to go with them.
Seriously, though, Sheffield Wednesday have always been a big club and I think and hope you will soon be back in the big time.

Redbird.

3.) Ex cardiff obviously

4.) Class defender for Celtic and good in his hayday let's just hope he's as good now as he was back then, would be an awesome partnership with either Gardner or Johnson should have been signed sooner instead of zayette! Good luck loovens show us what you've got to keep us in this division

5.) I could not care less who we sign any more. Even if we signed Messi on loan for a month it would make me feel just as despondant as I already do about this Wednesday team. A team of old Cardiff / Wolves has beens. A team of other team's players. It's not our Wednesday any more. The best period from 2005-2020 will be the Megson era. We've now got another 6-7 years of misery. We've just gone backwards 3-4 years.

6.) 29 Nov 2013 23:00:33
Cart say how I no but if we lose on Saturday Stewart Pearce we be our new boss some saying it is already done like megson jones was no matter what the score

7.) Is that caus he's 2-1 favorite on twitter

8.) Twitter and the tabloids are gospel mate.

9.) No no no to Stuart Pearce. Just a chest beater an done sod all as a league manager.

10.) Another miserable Saturday, only team in football league who hasn`t kept a clean sheet, fryatts last game and gets 15mins, 1 win in 16 a joke, now what mm

11.) Magiure scored for Coventry today
Fryatt given a bit part

Cannot believe this absolute joke of a so called Manager

ENOUGH SACK HIM NOW

12.) For eighteen months some of us have been questioning Jones transfer signings, his team selection, his match tactics and his lack of passion and so on. However the Jones fan club in their rose tinted glasses have rubbished us, insinuated that we are not true Owls fans, because if you don't agree with their point of view you can't possibly be an Owls fan, they called us negsperts, negative and generally derided every realistic and honest comment we made. But gives me and I suspect and lot of the other negsperts no pleasure to be proved right and the Jones fan club wrong. Can't wait for Jones to go. Must be Monday at the latest.

13.) 30 Nov 2013 19:07:36
I just can't believe he started with one striker what on earth. All I think is now he knows his time is nearly up DJ is going out to defend but still didn't work for him. Get rid now he hasn't got a clue.

14.) Barnsley have sacked Flitcroft

Jones is still in charge

Mandaric borrowing money against Hillsborough

Smoke and Mirrors Milan

You are seriously taking the p*** now

What happened to the "Wednesday Family" are you selling the family silver off to line your own pockets?

15.) Mcguire with 2 awsome free kicks well done dj

16.) If its money to get him out am sure if we all put in 2 quid a game in a pot am sure that would add up to about £40000 just at Hillsborough. Sod it a fiver! Whos in?

17.) 01 Dec 2013 07:34:31
We never expected anything from Blackpool today so it's Leicester next, do we expect anything then no, oh then it's forest after that they are having a bit of a time just lately but we can get them back on a winning streak. DJ will not be dismissed until after the forest game at the earliest

18.) My brother is a millwall fan and took him to leicester for his birthday leicester were quality, that fact millwall were s**t made them look better but leicester didn't get out of 3rd gear, i'm worried for us think we might go down, I think jones is waiting for his payout he ent going to resign! MILAN WONT PAY OUT because HE WANTS TO SELL! we r in trouble, kirkland could have gone in the summer to the prem, now his on the bench? think jones may have lost it now, only couraging thing is the fans turning up in numbers! let's keep the support up for the players

19.) For the players they couldn't give a toss Mr. C

There have been 30 permanent Wednesday managers in total (not counting caretakers). Because I was generally interested and because of the recent Megson Vs Jones debate I was just pondering who been the most successful and I was shocked at just how high Megson's win % was compared to the greats. Just thought I'd share my top 5 managers in Owls history based on a few factors (in terms of trophies I'm only counting major trophies, not runners up medals, promotions, lower league championships etc).

Major Trophies:

1. Arthur Dickinson - Two league championships (1902-03 and 1903-04) and two FA Cups (1896 and 1907).
2. Robert Brown - Two league championships (1928-29 and 1929-30).
3. Billy Walker - One FA Cup (1935).
4. Ron Atkinson - One League Cup (1991).
5. No other manager has won major trophies.

Gary Megson - No major trophies.

Win %:

1. Harry Catterick - 55. 80%
2. Vic Buckingham - 47. 01%
3. Gary Megson - 45. 16%*
4. Howard Wilkinson - 44. 71%
5. Robert Brown - 44. 33%

*Just in case you didn't know already Dave Jones' win % was 35. 80%.

Total games won:

1. Arthur Dickinson - 393 games.
2. Robert Brown - 266 games.
3. Eric Taylor - 196 games.
4. Howard Wilkinson - 114 games.
5. Jack Charlton - 105 games.

Gary Megson - 28 games.

Longevity:

1. Arthur Dickinson (August 1891 to May 1920) - 919 games.
2. Robert Brown (June 1920 to December 1933) - 600 games.
3. Eric Taylor (April 1942 to July 1958) - 539 games.
4. Jack Charlton (8 October 1977 to 27 May 1983) - 269 games.
5. Howard Wilkinson (24 June 1983 to 10 October 1988) - 255 games.

Gary Megson (4 February 2011 to 29 February 2012) - 62 games.

Considering that Gary Megson was only briefly in charge his win % is stunning compared to the greats, Dave Jones is not even close. Is Meggo a great? Should Milan bite the bullet and recognise his winning ways and invite him back?

So who would your top 5 Wednesday managers of all time be?

Ponty_Owl

1.) Fascinating post ponty. As much as I liked megson I would argue his reecord was set entirely in the third tier where we surely were a big fish in a small pond. Although your post was well presented and nowhere does it suggest megson should be reinstated, in sure these facts will be hijacked by the gm fan club. N. B

2.) Great post Ponty!
Perhaps I should have gathered the stats?
I'm the one who's been defending Megson's record for the past 18mths or more, because he's been successful pretty much everywhere he's been.
Even at Bolton where he was booed every week! But that was a reaction to the fact that the fans didn't get the manager they wanted. He still managed to avoid relegation from what seemed an impossible position and take them in to Europe - still getting booed?
Some of our fans jump on the bandwagon and comment on - style of play - but we were in Lge1 with loan signings? Hard to play Barcelona football in those circumstances and be successful, which he was!
He made Hillsboro a difficult place for teams to come to again. DJ said it was difficult for our team to play here?
A good manager puts together a team from the players he has available to get results against the odds which is what he did in spades.
I remember when he was at West Brom he got loads of criticism for playing pretty, pretty football and losing games because of it?
The only thing Megson did wrong at S6 was battle with MM for more support in order to improve the squad.
He wanted the best for his club, which is what MM says he wants? - but he got sacked for it?
I find it ironic that Megson got sacked for being too passionate about our club - perhaps that's why DJ came in and showed NONE!

3.) Yep, Megson was in League 1 so that needs to be taken into account but we also must consider that some of the 'greats' brought the club up from the lower leagues into the top flight so there is some comparison. The interesting thing is that DJ and GM had very similar win % in League 1, DJ win % plummeted when we were promoted and he signed his players. Whether that is because the step up in class caught up with him or the squad is open to debate and we cannot compare how GM did at this level because he was never given the chance.

All in all the facts are that over their complete tenures with similar numbers of games in charge GM for whatever reason had a better winning mentality. That being said, I agree that GM should not be considered as a 'great' like some fans have put him on a pedestal but he was a good manager, whatever his faults.

It's over with now, it's history. GM and DJ have gone and it is time to move on. The stats to point to something though, the most successful managers in our history have on the whole been ones who have had a long time at the club, board room backing, the backing of the fans and who have had the chance to build a stable team over years. There is no getting away from that. The way we have chopped and changed managers over the recent decades has been very unsuccessful.

I just hope that MM realises this and picks the right person for the job and backs them (sensibly and within budget) with transfer funds to build a squad that becomes the long term backbone of the club and the fans are patient and hopefully we will see year in year improvement and a rise up the leagues. A shirt term fix and instant success is totally unrealistic.

4.) Never mind megson, bring back Arthur Dickinson ponty

5.) Haha he's probably got as much life in him as DJ.

Paul Dikov has given a press conference, saying he has no interest in the Wednesday job. Thank God for that.

Ponty_Owl

1.) Thank god as we have no interest in him. N. B

11 Dec 2013 09:24:47
MM says he is not actively pursuing a new manager because he is giving SG time to make the job his own, which would explain the wait for those who are impatient.

Ponty_Owl

1.) Too many points slipped away while Jones was being given chance after chance to turn it round. I hope that Stuart Gray can save the situation and quickly, but I am apprehensive. Indecision is dangerous.
High Green Owl

2.) Time for jones, now time for grey?! mm sort it out and bring in a manager who has a clue! Time after time?! We don't have time we are going down unless MM gets his finger out!

02 Dec 2013 19:26:46
Steve Coppell has quit as DoF at Crawley, where is he off do you reckon?

Ponty_Owl

1.) Of all the suggestions I've read, that is probably the best. Fantasic record and fantastic guy. PS I'm not his agent. JR

02 Dec 2013 12:15:17
Gray is in charge for the Leicester game with Bullen as his assistant, which rules out a new man being in charge before the game. Still could have named the new man by them though.

Ponty_Owl

1.) I've heard Gray and Bullen will be in charge at the weekend too although the new man should have been named by then. This gives the new man time to assess the squad but also a full week to settle the team into a new regime.

My "what?" comment was aimed at the "MacLeish new manager I we'll could av been worse good luck" comment by the way, just to clear that up. I just don't know what that comment is meant to be saying.

Aye SC went to Pompey as DoF, exactly like I said he would and was slated for saying, then was slated again when I mentioned the deal had been done. And now ill get slated again here with people disagreeing that I was right (even though I was, as I generally often am). Fun and games.

MM needs to put his hand in his pocket firstly. Secondly if we keep the spine of our defence for and happy and perhaps bring back some of those signings from the development squad to train with the first team we may actually have one or two gems that are ready to step up.

Ponty_Owl

I agree he is doing well but I'm still more than sceptical. Surely as head coach under DJ he was responsible for training anyway (considering DJ never trained) and the team selection has been largely the same. So why are the players suddenly playing for the same coach, albeit without DJ in charge? Makes me wonder.

Plus Gray has an abysmal record as an actual manager, good coach but not done it as No1. I don't want Peter Eustace Mk II, thanks.

Spot on. From what I remember we had 2 shots today, 1 on target (the goal). We need more creativity in the midfield and a couple of strikers urgently. It's no good defending like Italy all of a sudden if we don't create chances. Good win today though!

Ponty_Owl

Yep, we seem to be taking small steps forward, great win today! But be careful about those rose tinted glasses, today we barely had possession, only managed two shots that I can remember and Martinez kept us in the game on a few occasions. We still need a decent creative midfielder and a couple of strikers urgently to build on our vastly improving defence. All those who moaned about Glenn Loovens signing, he was a rock today, a proper class act.
